The Contemporary Woman: call for submissions

THE CONTEMPORARY WOMAN
Pranksters Art Show
Montrose Softball League, Inc.

It’s an exhibition of photographs and sketches honoring the contemporary woman. What does that mean to you? Is she a stay at home mother, a workaholic or an activist? Is she a world traveler, does she blur the gender line or is she an artisan? Is she a conqueror or is she a victim? Meek or unapologetic, literal or figurative, we want to see your take on the contemporary woman.

Official rules, terms and conditions:

The Contemporary Woman (the “show”) is open to all amateur and professional photographers and sketch artists. Submissions to the show will be accepted from 12:01 a.m. Central Daylight Time on February 1, 2010, to (noon) CDT on Friday, March 5, 2010. Any works submitted outside the stated period will not be considered for inclusion in the show.

To be considered for inclusion in the show, submit up to three separate images using the entry form. Each entrant must also send a $15 entry fee no later than noon Friday, March 5, 2010, or his or her entries will be disregarded. Images submitted must be in JPEG format (at least 300dpi) and be sized to no larger than 1,000 pixels on the longest side (files must also be 300K or smaller in size). Submissions must be genuine photographic images that have already been corrected, cropped and otherwise altered to the appearance and size ratio at which they will appear if selected for the show. Images need not be originally digital, but they must be submitted in a digital format meeting the specifications outlined above. All submitted photos and sketches must be originals. Entrants must affirm that photographs and sketches are their original work and that they are the holder of the copyright to, or have the right to copyright, any photos they submit, and that photographs and/or sketches submitted for consideration for the show have not been shown in any prior public exhibition.

Photographers and artists whose work is selected to appear in the show will be notified by telephone or e-mail no later than 11:59 PM Monday, March 15, 2010. If a photographer or artist whose work is selected cannot be contacted within five days after March 15, or in the event of his or her non-compliance with any of the requirements set forth herein, Montrose Softball League reserves the right to replace his or her work with that of another photographer or artist.

By completing and submitting the entry form, each entrant attests in connection with each image submitted as part of his or her entry that: he or she is the owner of the photograph or sketch; that the photograph or sketch is an original work; that he or she has all the necessary rights to the photograph or sketch; that the photograph or sketch does not defame or otherwise violate the rights of any third party; and that the photograph or sketch does not violate any federal, state or local laws or ordinances. Entrants agree to hold harmless Montrose Softball League, show sponsors, their employees and affiliated organizations from any claim by any third party relating to their participation in the show. Further, by completing and submitting the entry form, each entrant assigns all publication rights to Montrose Softball League.

By participating in the show, entrants agree to be bound by the rules set forth herein, including all eligibility requirements and decisions of Montrose Softball League, which are final and binding in all matters relating to the show. Montrose Softball League is not responsible for lost, late, damaged or misdirected entries; computer or network malfunctions or errors; or disruptions related to Internet traffic, viruses, bugs or worms. Persons found abusing any aspect of the selection process, or whom Montrose Softball League believes to be causing any malfunction, error, disruption or damage, may be disqualified from consideration for the show. Further, Montrose Softball League reserves the right to disqualify any unauthorized entries.

By submitting an entry, entrants agree to hold Montrose Softball League, show sponsors and all affiliated entities harmless from any and all liability, claims or actions of any kind arising out of their participation in the show. In addition, entrants agree that the above-mentioned entities are in no way responsible for any warranty, representation or guarantee, expressed or implied, in fact or in law, relating to the show.

FAQ:

If you don't find the answer to your question here, please drop us an e-mail at prankstersartshow@gmail.com and we'll be happy to get you the information you need. No question is too small. Seriously, ask us anything.

Is this show only open to professional photographers and artists?
Heck no! The show is open to everyone, no matter your experience level. Because the jury process is anonymous, every photo or sketch selected to appear in the show will be picked based on how good it is, not on who created it.

What are your framing specs?
We'll release details when we notify the photographers whose work will appear in the show, but basically, a 2-inch visible white acid-free mat on all sides (full frame size to be 11x14 inches for the 8x10 image), and matte black wood or metal frame. Photographers and artists will be responsible for their own framing.

Does it matter if my photos are B&W or color?
Nope.

Does it matter if my sketches are B&W or color?
Yes. Sketches must be in graphite, black charcoal, black Prismacolor, black pastel, black crayon, black marker (see where this is going?)… anything black or gray on white paper.

I am interested in participating but do not want to sell my work. Is it possible to participate and not have to sell my work?
No. This is a philanthropic show. The idea is to raise lots of money for charity. However the photographers and artists will receive $30 compensation for each work shown, as well as potential for prize earnings.

Am I responsible for getting my photo printed if it is picked to be in the show?
Yes (and artists are responsible for framing their original sketches). We recommend getting your prints professionally done — we can suggest a printer if you don't have one that you prefer — and we recommend printing on matte paper, because it views better when framed and under glass.

Will I be able to set my own price for my work?
No. We will set up pricing guidelines. We do understand that some of you are professional photographers and artists who can set a higher price for your work, but this will also likely be the first time some of you have ever had your work shown. Because of that, we're leveling the playing field by setting pricing standards for everyone.

What if my work doesn't sell that night? Will I get it back?
No. Montrose Softball League will be compensating you for your original work. Therefore Montrose Softball League will own the original works in the show. We will continue to push the sale of works that may not find homes the night of the show. And remember, all of your efforts as well as ours go back to charity!

Does Montrose Softball League claim any rights to use my images for any other purpose than display in the show?
Yes. By submitting the entry form along with your images and submission fee, you are turning over the publication rights for all submitted works to Montrose Softball League. Montrose Softball League reserves the right to use all submitted images for any marketing, press, advertisement and/or book publication relative to the show.

Can a photographer and/or artist have more than one photo and/or sketch in the show?
Yes, it could happen. The jurors won't know whose photos they are looking at — they'll be judging based on the image itself — so it is possible that a single photographer and/or artist could end up with more than one photo and/or sketch in the show.

Where does my entry fee go?
It all goes back into the show for general expenses: marketing, hanging hardware and other incidental costs.

What if I'm out of town on the 15th, when photographers and artists are notified that their work will be in the show?
No problem — our first line of communication will be by e-mail, so be sure and check your mail that day for notification. If we can't reach you by e-mail, we'll try phone next.

What are the benefits of participating?
Exposure, exposure, exposure! Last year’s event attracted over 500 people and gained mention in more than three local publications. There will be press coverage. There will be potential for publication in a book of collected works. Artists will receive $30 for each photo/sketch selected for show (which will be enough to cover your entry fee as well as printing and framing costs, meaning you will not be out of pocket for your participation). Artists will also receive one ticket for free entry into the event ($15 value). There will be a judging and prize offered to a “Best in Show.” Best of all, this is all in the name of charity! You’ll be a part of Montrose Softball League’s biggest annual philanthropic event. And you can go home feeling great about yourself because you did something wonderful for someone truly in need.

Where & When?
At South Beach Night Club, 810 Pacific Street, Houston, TX 77006. The front lounge will be dedicated to the art show.
Saturday, 27 March 2010
6:00 - 10:00PM

May committee persons and other personnel involved with Pranksters in Pumps submit to the art show?
Yes. Because this is for a philanthropic cause, we’re not narrowing the submission pool. However, because of conflict of interest, any committee persons or other individuals involved in the event cannot be eligible for prize earnings.

Where is the money going this year?
This year's selected recipients are: Aids Foundation Houston - Camp Hope, Bering Omega Community Services, and Live Consortium.
